That software already exists. New software probably isn't really needed.
Also, to do contracting work, it takes years of experience in a hospital.

Ashley

that kind of software already exists from many companies. - no sense trying to re-invent the wheel - getting an assoc degree in medical transcription and billing will only teach you how to use the existing software - if you want to create an entirely new program, first, you would have to know what features users want in the software, etc. you would need to learn computer programming - usually a bachelors degree and then you'd have to spend months writing code, wondering if you are doing it right - all the while, not getting paid, then you would have to go out and try selling the programs (still not getting paid until you actually sell a copy) and it make take you months or years to sell your first copy (all the while still not getting paid)

The programs for medical billing already exist. You would have to write a better one.

Brad

Hi Joy! Yes, there are legitimate companies that hire people to do medical billing and coding from home. To find these companies and jobs, first go to job posting sites, such as HotJobs or Monster. Then, search through the medical billing and coding jobs using the keyword "telecommuting"

I also have a book that lists companies that hire for this kind of job. I don't know the title off the top of my head, but if you're interested, let me know and I'll look for it.

Gail

Not sure of the name of the company, but I have a friend who does this in LA County and makes pretty good money doing it. I know that that company prefers to have folks work close to LA (I'm only 2.5 hours out of LA but still too far.).

Hope this helps...

Cory

I believe there are several, but they require at least a couple of years of actual experience in an office. You say you don't want the companies that try to sell software and so on, but you were apparently taken in by a company that led you to believe you could get training online and end up with a good job. That is almost never the case. All reputable companies want a history of actual experience.

Tamara

I spent six years working for a company that implements electronic medical records systems (EMR) in hospitals and there is a massive expense to do so. First, the new EMR system has to be integrated into the existing software applications that the hospital or doctor's office uses. This means that all existing systems must "feed" information into the EMR (ex: lab, radiology, etc.). In addition, some EMR systems are done right on the computer by the clinical staff while others use the paper forms and the paper chart is then scanned into the EMR system. This is an additional expense to an EMR. Any dictated reports (History & Physical, Consultations, Operative Notes, etc.) must also be fed into the EMR system. To be honest, $17 million is a 'low-ball' cost estimate for a hospital to implement an EMR system.

Scott

Big subject. There are many many ways to do this, depending on the computers and the operating system. Here's one of the very simplest. Every computer should have Windows XP, with service pack two, and a network jack, either on the motherboard or a separate card.

Get a "router" and "RJ45" network cables. Here's one popular one, for up to four computers:

[People will quarrel with my choice. It's like recommending a car.]

Plug everything in and turn them on. Run the "Network Setup Wizard" on Windows XP.

More details (don't get put off by "home", could be a small business):

A lot more details (don't get put off by the title):
