Is $17million a lot of money to digitize the medical system?

Every doctor’s office I go in has plenty of computers as does the hospital. All they need is some software. Is that where the $17 million come from? Where is Bill Gates When you need him?

I spent six years working for a company that implements electronic medical records systems (EMR) in hospitals and there is a massive expense to do so. First, the new EMR system has to be integrated into the existing software applications that the hospital or doctor’s office uses. This means that all existing systems must “feed” information into the EMR (ex: lab, radiology, etc.). In addition, some EMR systems are done right on the computer by the clinical staff while others use the paper forms and the paper chart is then scanned into the EMR system. This is an additional expense to an EMR. Any dictated reports (History & Physical, Consultations, Operative Notes, etc.) must also be fed into the EMR system. To be honest, $17 million is a ‘low-ball’ cost estimate for a hospital to implement an EMR system.
